Last weeks article provided you with all of the info on self-rimming sinks. In this weeks article we are going to take that a step further and provide you with the steps on how to install a self-rimming sink.

Step 1: Map Out Location

Tip your self-rimming sink upside down over top of the area it will be installed. Then trace around the edges of the sink to give yourself a reference for making the cutout for the installation. The actual cut will be about 1″ inside this line to create a ledge for the sink. In some cases your self-rimming sink may come with a pre-made cutout, if so use that.

Step 2: Cutout Sink Opening

To start, drill a hole into the cutout area to provide yourself a starting point for the jigsaw. Then using the jigsaw cutout the sink opening using the location lines created in step 1. The sink will cover your cuts so you don’t have to be perfect but you should still try to keep it as clean as possible.

Step 3: Attach Plumbing

Before you insert the new self-rimming sink into the opening you will want to first connect as much plumbing as possible. You can flip the sink upside down and make all of the connections you can now.

Step 4: Caulk The Opening

Apply an even bead of caulking around the entire sink opening just outside of the cut you made. Each sink is different so you want to ensure that the area you are placing the caulking will make direct contact with the sink flange when inserted.

Step 5: Insert The Sink

With the caulking down you are now ready to place the self-rimming sink into the cutout. Try to get the sink centred as quickly as possible so you don’t disturb the caulk as it is setting as this could potentially break the seal.

Step 6: Install Mounting Clips

You sink should have come with mounting clips. If they did you want to now install them from underneath the sink using a screwdriver. There should be approximately 3 clips per side. Make sure you don’t over tighten these as you could warp the sink.
