In a two-handle tub and shower design you will find a gate diverter located on the tub spout. The gate diverter rarely requires any repair, however, you may find yourself in that situation. They do occasionally break, become loose or don’t stay in the up position. If you find yourself with anyone of these issues your best bet is to replace the entire tub spout. This is very inexpensive and relatively easy to replace. Here is a brief rundown on how to replace a tub spout.

Step 1: Turn Of Water

Before you get into the actual replacement you want to ensure that the water supply to the shower is turned off.

Step 2: Detach Spout From Wall

There are two options to remove the spout from the wall depending on your model. First check if there is an opening underneath the tub spout at its closest point to the wall. If you see an opening then your spout is secured with an Allen screw. Find the right sized Allen wrench and loosen the Allen screw, the spout should just slide off. If you do not see the opening underneath the spout then you will need a pipe wrench to remove the spout. Place the pipe wrench on the spout counterclockwise to detach it from the wall.

Step 3: Install New Spout

Before you install the new spout you will want to first apply a layer of pipe joint compound on the threads of the spout nipple. Once applied you can then install the new spout using the manufactures directions provided with your product.
