Over time a dishwasher can become inefficient as you may find that it does not clean as effectively. You may notice this if you are spending a good amount of time pre-rinsinng the dishes to ensure they come out of the dishwasher clean. This will cause more energy and water consumption than necessary. You may also realize that it is not as energy efficient as you may like it to be. If you have checked any of these off while reading it may be time to look into replacing your current dishwasher. So, now you need to know how to remove an old dishwasher.

When it comes to choosing the best dishwasher for your home there are a few things to consider. Firstly you should know that today most dishwashers are generally standard in relation to sizing and hook up. This is a big help if your dishwasher is build into your cabinetry as you will not need to renovate your kitchen in order to replace your current model. That said, it is always a good idea to measure the current space allocated for a dishwasher unit and make sure the one you purchase can fit into that space.  Once you have weighted your options in regards to the different models available and make your decision it is not time to remove your current dishwasher. The project should only take a couple of hours. Here are the steps on how to remove an old dishwasher.

Shutting Off The Power and Water

The initial step in this project is an important one. First you want to make sure that you shut off the power to the circuit you are working on via the service panel. Next you want to make sure you also turn off the water supply to the dishwasher by closing the shutoff valve which is more than likely located directly under the floor.

Disconnect The Plumbing

First you will need to unscrew the front access planel and then once that is off you can disconnect the water supply connection from the fitting at the bottom of the unit.

TIP: Place a bowl or dish under the cross compression fitting before removing it. This way if any water was still in the unit it will be caught by the bowl as you are removing the nut.

Disconnect The Electrical

Now you want to disconnect any of the wiring connections to the unit. There should be an electrical box at the bottom front of the unit which is covered. Remove the cover to expose the electrical components. You should find some wires and connectors, remove the connectors that join the wires together.

Detach The Dishwasher

Proceed to detach the dishwasher unit from the cabinets. This is done by removing the screws that hold the top of the unit to the countertop. Make sure this is done prior to attempting to pull out the unit.

TIP: Place a piece of cardboard or old carpet under the front legs of the dishwasher before you begin to pull it out. This will prevent any scratches or damage to your kitchen floor when you begin to remove it.

Remove The Dishwasher

You are now ready to remove the dish from its location.
