What Is a Backwater Valve?
When installed on the main sewer line, a backwater valve allows wastewater to flow out but seals automatically if it tries to reverse direction. This prevents sewage from entering your home through floor drains or lower-level fixtures during a flood or heavy storm.
Homeowners may confuse these valves with backflow preventers, which are installed on your clean water supply to prevent contamination caused by sudden pressure changes. While serving a different purpose, both are important for your safety.
How it Works
Inside the valve, a small flap opens and closes with water pressure. If the sewage or septic system is affected by a storm and water starts to push back toward your property, the flap closes to block the reverse flow.
Do I Need a Backwater Valve?
If you’re unsure whether your home needs a backwater valve, there are a few key factors to consider. A quick call to Caldwell Plumbing can help you determine your level of risk and what’s required for your property.
- New homes: The Toronto Municipal Building Code requires all new houses to have a Full Port Main Line Backwater Valve installed just before the property’s sewer line exits the foundation.
- Existing homes: Current building codes also require existing homes to have a full port main line backwater valve installed to help prevent flooding and contamination.
- Older neighbourhoods: Homes in areas with infrastructure over 40 years old are more likely to experience sewer backups caused by aging city systems.
- Low-lying properties: If your home sits at the bottom of a hill or your main floor is below the nearest upstream manhole, a backwater valve is required by municipal code to prevent sewage from flowing back into your home.
Without this protection, wastewater can surge into basements and ground floors, damaging walls, flooring, and electrical systems. Installing a backwater valve is a cost-effective way to prevent thousands of dollars in potential flood damage and contamination.

Backwater Valve Repairs & Maintenance
Even the best valves need regular care to stay reliable.
Back Water Valve Regular Maintenance
It’s important to have your system serviced annually to ensure it’s in good working order. The walls of the valve can accumulate scale buildup, so it’s important to keep it clean so it can work without any obstruction.
The experts at Caldwell Plumbing can provide inspection, cleaning, and repair services to keep your system working effectively year-round.
Common Signs of Backwater Valve Failure
If you notice any of these warning signs, contact Caldwell Plumbing for an inspection before a full backup occurs.

FAQs
A backwater valve prevents wastewater from flowing backward into your home’s plumbing during heavy rain or municipal sewer backups. It seals automatically and is an important line of defence to avoid costly flooding.
When the valve shuts to block backflow, you should avoid using water fixtures (toilets, sinks, showers) until the pressure equalizes. Once the municipal system returns to normal, the valve reopens automatically.
Many municipalities require a backwater valve for homes with basements or low-level plumbing. Caldwell Plumbing ensures every installation meets your local by-law requirements.
Yes. In most municipalities, a plumbing permit is required. Caldwell Plumbing handles all necessary permits and inspections to ensure your installation meets local and Ontario Building Code requirements.
We recommend an annual inspection to remove debris, check the flap seal, and verify proper function. Regular maintenance helps prevent unexpected failures.
No. A backwater valve must be installed by a licensed plumber to ensure compliance with building codes and eligibility for rebates.
