The majority of houses tend to have washing machine drain that is loosely hung over the side of the utility sink which is something that is not recommended by today’s building codes. What they do recommend is having a standpipe drain installed which would allow the water to drain right into the drain line as opposed to into the utility sink as the stand pipe is connected directly to the p-trap. One of the requirements from building codes would be to make sure the standpipe is higher thank the higher water level in the washing machine. They may also require that a 2″ pip connect the standpipe drain to the p-trap.
