Sometimes you may run into the problem where your toilet hand and/or lift chain are not functioning properly. You may be pressing down on the handle and the toilet will not flush. Today we will show you how to adjust a toilet handle and lift chain in case you ever find that you run into this problem.

Clean and Adjust The Handle

The first thing you want to do is clean and adjust the handle mounting nut. This will ensure that the handle is functioning smoothly. To this you want to loosen the nut by turning it counter clockwise from the inside of the tank. This nut has reverse threads, this is why you want to loosen by turning clockwise instead of the standard counter clockwise. Once it is loose take a brush and dip it in vinegar and then clean around the nut to remove any lime build up.

Adjust The Lift Chain

You want to make sure that your lift chain is setup properly to ensure proper functionality. You will want to adjust the chain so that it hangs straight down from the handle lever leaving about 1/2″ of slack. If there is more than the recommended 1/2″ of slack you need to unhook the chain from the lever and re-hook in into a link on the chain that will provide the 1/2″ of slack you need. During this time if you see any breaks in the chain you need to replace it to ensure it will function properly.
