In one of our previous articles we provided you with our input on how to choose a new kitchen faucet. Once you have weighed your options, made your decision and purchased your new faucet the next step would be to remove the old faucet. In this article we will give step by step instructions on how to remove an old faucet.
Prep The Old Faucet
The first step in this process is to remove anything that you are storing in the under the sink cabinet. Then you will want to lay down some towels as a precaution. You then want to locate both your hot and cold stop valves an turn them off. Once they are off open the hot and cold knobs on the faucet to ensure that the water is off. Next you want to locate the spot where the sprayer hose connects to the faucet sprayer and disconnect them. You are then able to unscrew the retaining nut which connects the sprayer to the sink deck allowing you to pull the sprayer hose out through the opening in the sink deck.
Disconnect The Old Faucet
Underneath the sink deck locate the mounting nuts that hold the faucet handles. First spray them with penetrating oil and let it sit for a few minuets, this will allow for easier removal. You are then ready to loosen the mounting nut. If the nut is stuck and you are unable to loosen you will have to drill a hole in the side of the nut and then tap with a hammer and screwdriver. You next want to locate where the supply tubes connect to the stop valves and disconnect them. Then remove the coupling nuts and the mounting nuts with wrench or pliers.
Removing The Old Faucet
At this point you should be able to pull the faucet body right off of the sink. Once off you should scrape off any old putty or caulk with a putty knife and then scrub with a scouring pad and an acidic cleaner.
